When there were only about 5 dedicated Cancer hospitals in India, Dr Saroj Gupta a young Oncologist trained in India and UK, saw the plight of Cancer patients traveling all the way from remote areas not getting a seat in the city hospital and dying on the street or going back without treatment. He decided to set up a `Home away from Home` in the lap of nature to give shelter to these patients and give some basic care. The 1st opportunity came in 1973 when the family members of one of his patients, came forward offering 6 aces of his ancestral land with a condition that something has to be done within a year. Forming a Society with some like minded people, Dr Gupta wrote and enacted a Drama as the
1st Fund raising programme. Soon a 25 bedded dormitory came up where the patients were taken care by handful of Doctors and nurses and the patients were ferried to Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital for treatment. The need for full diagnostic and treatment facilities were soon felt by all. Many well wishers, including celebrities, industrialists and even daily wage earners and school children joined hands to make this Home a fully comprehensive modern Cancer hospital.
The Centre managed to have many latest technologies, some of them were first of their kind in India. With the support of all, including many eminent doctors who joined the team on voluntary basis to serve mankind, the centre has become one of the largest dedicated Cancer hospitals with 311 beds in beautiful buildings spread over 12 acres of land with soothing landscapes including water bodies, amusement parks, fountains, amphitheatre, Toy train etc. It has all the modern Diagnostic and treatment facilities without deviating from the philosophy of serving the underprivileged people for whom half of the beds are reserved. The centre runs on donation and cross subsidy model and provides facilities for all classes of people.
